Perry High School now has over 300 books for you to start marking up! Create some art between the pages for future readers or participate in a conversation that has already started!

Hello…
We wanted to introduce an opportunity to the staff to help promote reading within the district through a project called Graffiti Books. The hope is to turn reading into a social experience and connect students, teachers, and the district through common texts. In other words, make reading fun!
We were lucky enough to receive a grant to fund the purchase of a few hundred high interest reading books (both fiction and non-fiction) that we will invite the students to “deface.” Students will be encouraged to write all over the pages of the books. They can include thoughts, questions, doodles, and reactions to the text. Each student will get a specific colored pen and add to the graffiti book experience by adding their own unique responses, thoughts, and insights. This book will then be given to another student with a different color pen to begin the graffiti process all over again. At the end of each school year, we’ll have a graffiti party where kids can paint their favorite lines on the wall outside of the library and revisit the book(s) they read to see all of the new graffiti added by other readers.
We’ve piloted this with a small number of books and have had some really amazing and fun creations from the students. We hope to grow a collection of books full of graffiti that others can continue to add to or just check out and read with the added element of this writing.
This is where you come in. We purchased multiple copies of four specific books that we not only want to invite students to read, but also our staff and eventually the community.
We would love for you to help contribute to our graffiti books! Are you interested?
If so, please respond back to JODI with the book that you’d like to read (click on each to read the summaries about the book). You will then receive a copy of the book to “deface”., a bookmark with ideas and ways to add to the graffiti books, and a special colored pen to identify your comments. You can write as little or as much as you like! We do ask that you read your book by the end of the school year, so that we can pass them on to the next reader during the summer.
